What is a Blog?
A blog is a kind of website that isn’t the same as an official website. People usually play around with those terms but don’t know the difference. Most think a website is a blog or a blog is a website but they have huge distinctions.
Yes! A blog is classified as a website but it falls under but It mainly focuses on written content (known as blog posts) that can be updated as you desire and at any time.
Bloggers always write from a personal perspective that allows them to build a community with their audiences. As a blogger, you are free to share your knowledge, ideas, and opinions while garnering support from like-minded individuals who share your sentiments.
And a website is a form of a portfolio that you can use to display and advertise your services, whether you are an organization or an entrepreneur, There are no blog posts but rather organized pages.
You don’t need to be a prolific writer to start a blog. As long as you have a topic or interest you are passionate about, blogging will be an exciting venture to pursue because you gain a loving community in return and get to help them learn and grow with them.
Of course, there are certain requirements and rules you need to follow but when you finally create your blog(which is the initial step) the rest will be a walk in the park.
I am going to show you a simple guide to jump start your blogging journey.
How Do I Start a Blog?
- By Choosing a blog name.
- By getting your blog online.
- By Customizing your blog.
- By Writing and Publishing your first post.
Step 1: Choose a Blog Name
You need to take time with this. Your blog name needs to be very unique and catchy in order to grab your readers’ attention.
Your blog name also needs to demonstrate the vision you have for your blog. You might not know what you are going to publish yet but have a vision of what you want your blog to be.
So your blog name needs to be unique, catchy, and be able to demonstrate your vision.
If you need help deciding on what name you want. Contact me on my email email@example.com and I will be happy to help you free of charge!
Once you have decided on a name, you will need to choose a domain extension. Examples of domain extensions are:
These are pretty self-explanatory but a .org is mainly used by an organization. So if you are an organization this domain name is for you.
A .net is mainly used by organizations that deal with networking technologies such as Internet services providers.
A .Com is the most common and preferred one.
When picking a domain name, it should not have any spaces or punctuation except for dashes.
An example of a wrong domain name would be ‘Sarah decor homes .com‘
A right example of domain name would be ‘sarahdecorhomes.com‘
Your domain name has to be very unique because 90% of the time you will find that your domain name is taken, but you can always play around with it till it’s available.
If ‘saradecorhomes.com‘ is taken try ‘sarahdecor.com‘ or ‘saradecorhomes.org‘
Step 2: Get your Blog Online
After deciding on what name you want for your blog. It is time to get your blog online. This can be complex if you don’t know what you are doing but I am going to walk you step by step.
To get your blog online and functioning you will need two things: A hosting company and blogging software.
The Hosting company stores all of the files for your blog and delivers them to the user when they type in your blog name.
You must have a host to have a safe secure functioning blog. You must also have software to build your blog. I am going to be using WordPress because it’s one of the best blogging software. After all, it’s customizable and beginner-friendly.
There are a few hosting companies I would recommend because I have done a thorough research and written about them, but I love Bluehost.
I am going to use Bluehost for this guide and I will create two other guides for the other companies.
But Bluehost is highly recommended for new bloggers because:
- They have an offer to register your blog name for you for free for the first year.
- They have a free, simple installation of the WordPress blogging software.
- They have been recommended by WordPress since 2005 and currently host over 2 million blogs and websites.
- They have a customer service that operates 24/7. You can reach them via phone or webchat.
- They have a 30-day money-back guarantee if you are unsatisfied for any reason.
Note that Bluehost doesn’t charge by the month for new accounts. When you pay you will pay for a whole package.
2. Select the plan of your choice. I recommend that new bloggers get the basic plan. Click “Select” to choose your plan.
3. Type in your domain name in the left box and then click “next” to start the registration process.
If you already own a domain name and want to use it for your blog, type your existing domain in the right box and then click “next”.
Only use the right box if you have previously paid to register a domain!
4. Fill out your billing details on the registration page.
5. You will also need to choose your hosting package and options.
All packages have everything you need to get your blog up and running, including a free domain name, easy WordPress blog installation, web hosting, and branded email accounts (e.g. firstname.lastname@example.org).
The 36-month package gets you the lowest monthly rate, while the 12-month package has a lower up-front cost.
I unchecked the boxes next to the other products when I sign-up. You can always get these products later if you decide you need them.
6. You will then need to create your account and password.
Now you will need to go into the process of installing WordPress. Your cPanel dashboard will look like this after you log in.
The steps you’ll need to go through to install WordPress is:
- Log in to your Bluehost hosting account.
- Open the My Sites tab from the side menu on the left.
- Click on the Create Site button.
- Enter the Site Name and Site Tagline.
- Click Next.
- Select the domain you wish to install from the drop-down list.
- Choose the directory this should be installed to, and click Next.
1. Log in to your Bluehost hosting account.
2. Open the My Sites tab from the side menu on the left.
3.Click on the Create Site button.
4. Enter the Site Name and Site Tagline.
5. Click Next.
6. Select the domain you wish to install to from the drop-down list.
With Bluehost web hosting signup you would have received a free domain name (for the first year). That free domain will be in the dropdown list.
If you registered multiple domain names you can choose the one you want to install WordPress on.
7. Choose the directory and click Next.
If you leave the default (optional) then it will install WordPress in the root folder. Example of root WordPress installation www.sarahdecorhomes.com
The WordPress Installation will take about 5 minutes.
Congratulations! you are almost Done!
Step 3: Customize your blog
If you are not already logged-in from the previous step, go to Bluehost.com and click “Login” on the top right to bring up the login screen.
You can then log in using your domain name and the password you set in the previous step. If you have misplaced your password you can reset it by clicking the “Forgot Password” link.
After you log-in you will be taken to your BlueHost Dashboard. From the dashboard, you can click the blue “WordPress” button to be logged-in automatically to your blog.
Choosing your blog design.
When you log in you will be in the WordPress administrator area, and you will be able to make any changes you want to your blog. Everybody has different tastes but one of the greatest things about a WordPress blog is that you have the option of changing your entire layout and design with just a few clicks.
In your WordPress dashboard, there is a category known as ‘Themes’. To change your theme you are going to click on the ‘appearance’ tab on the left menu.
There will be several themes pre-installed but the them I recommend for you to use is Oceanwp. It’s very customizable and works well with Elementor.
This is the theme, hence why it’s active.
But to install a new theme, click on the ‘appearance’ tab on the left menu and then click ‘Add New Theme’. Type in Oceanwp and click install.
If you need a quick tutorial on how to customize Oceanwp with Elementer, Contact me at email@example.com and I will help you free of charge.
Customization is what will take time and energy out of your days but creating and registering a new blog is one of the simplest procedures.
Step 4: Writing and publishing your post.
I am proud of you for how far you have come!
You have created your blog without hiring an expensive web developer!
Now that your blog is up and running it’s time to start sharing your wonderful ideas and knowledge with the world by creating blog posts.
Navigate to the left menu and click on “Posts”.
You will see there is already a post there. This is a default post on every new WordPress blog, and you don’t need it. To delete it click “Trash” just under the post.
To begin writing a new post immediately, click the “Add New” link.
You are now on the post editor screen. Enter the title of your post in the top box and then begin writing your post in the lower box.
If you would like to add a picture to your post, click on the “Add Image” icon and click “Upload” to upload a picture from your computer. You can make adjustments to the picture size on the next screen. When you are ready click “Insert into post” to add the picture.
There is so much more to do if you want your blog to be successful!
Registering a domain name and getting it online isn’t that complicated and only takes like 15 minutes or less out of your day. I cannot explain everything here but there are important plug-ins you need to install to make your blog safe and SEO optimized.
Customization is what will take your time, but I am willing to help you for free by giving you the tutorials I used to get my blog to where it is today.
Just follow each procedure and use my link to purchase your hosting package so that I can get a small commission.
