Rick & Morty Season 6 Reuses The Pilot's Portal Gun Trick (& It's Genius)

Warning: This article contains spoilers for Rick and Morty season 6, episode 1.

Rick and Morty season 6 is repeating a trick that hasn't been seen since the series' pilot episode - and it's genius. One common complaint with Rick and Morty has been the lack

of stakes, as whenever there is trouble the titular duo can simply travel to another dimension, something that can clearly be seen when they destroy C-137 in season 1's "Rick

Potion #9." Rick and Morty have changed universes countless times throughout the show, but Evil Morty's effect on the Portal Gun has prevented this from happening - making Rick

and Morty season 6 even better. In the Rick and Morty season 5 finale, Evil

Morty breaks the Central Finite Curve, a collection of all the dimensions in which Rick Sanchez is the smartest person. As it turns out, Rick's portal gun can only travel between

dimensions within the Central Finite Curve, meaning that Evil Morty's plan has caused every portal gun to stop working. As is seen in Rick and Morty season 6, episode 1,

"Solaricks," Rick tries to reset the portal gun fluid but fails, causing a mess that has to be resolved throughout the episode. Episodes 2 and 3 don't appear to feature Rick

trying to fix the portal gun, meaning that he has presumably given up on repairing the portals for a while, and the lack of switching universes is actually genius.
